1. What Is Reverse Logistics?
Reverse logistics is the process of moving goods backwards through the supply chain, from the store or customer back to the manufacturer, depot or final point of disposal. It covers the uplift of damaged, short-dated and expired stock, product recalls, returns processing, reworking and recycling. Antel Solutions is a dedicated reverse logistics company that handles these processes for FMCG and retail brands across South Africa and Southern Africa.
2. What Is the Difference Between Forward and Reverse Logistics?
Forward logistics moves products from the manufacturer to the retailer and consumer. Reverse logistics moves them back again for return, recall, repair, resale, recycling or disposal. Forward logistics is usually planned and predictable. Reverse logistics tends to be irregular, because every product and its condition must be assessed case by case. That is why specialist systems and trained operators are needed to recover value from returned stock.
3. How Does Reverse Logistics Reduce Waste and Support Sustainability?
Reverse logistics reduces waste by diverting returned and unsaleable products away from landfill through repair, refurbishment, repackaging, resale, donation and recycling. Antel Solutions builds its projects around zero-to-landfill goals and circular economy principles. This helps manufacturers and retailers meet their sustainability, CSR and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) objectives while bringing value back into the supply chain.
4. How Is a Product Recall Handled in South Africa?
A product recall is handled by quickly removing the affected stock from stores and warehouses, recording its quantity and condition, and securing it until the manufacturer decides how it should be disposed of. Antel Solutions carries out recalls and withdrawals urgently and nationally. Its operators capture each uplift on the Antel App with photos and GPS data. Stock is tracked with QR-coded seals and bags and held securely at Antel depots until the principal gives disposal instructions.
5. What Happens to Damaged, Expired or Returned Stock After It Is Collected?
After collection, returned stock is taken to a depot where it is sorted by product and condition, then resold, donated, reworked, returned to the manufacturer, recycled or disposed of. Where the brand requires it, Antel debrands products by removing packaging, labels, branding and prices so they cannot damage brand equity. Claim documents are generated immediately in the Antel App, which gives accounts receivable teams the data they need to process credits quickly.
